Where can I go camping and living well in the tough, nearer to Boston, MA?

"I want an open fire and may be up to 1.3 days of civilization. I'm avoiding the campsites, but the roads are set OK. I will test my hardware and winter camping alone. Ideally, I do not have to drive 3-5 hours until the end of the White Mountains (NH) or Catskills (New York).

I think you have trouble finding a better place than the Appalachian Trail (AT). Not exactly close, but should be able to come in about 2 hours. I would look first ATC website (http://www.appalachiantrail.org/) which have much information, including an interactive map showing the cool of parking and places of refuge. Then I go straight to http://whiteblaze.net/ forums! This is where the real fans live. Exploration of the forums are an incredible amount of information there. When you get the feel of the forum, start a thread in the "Straight Forward". Tell them your ability, what you have in mind and ask for suggestions. You will get many good ideas.
