Why is my cat coughing like he is?

My cat is about ten years old and has had very little health problems in his years, the last one being rapid weight loss a couple years ago, presumably by tainted cat food (it was about that time). He keeps getting this cough, is sounds like doggy hiccups, but when he gets it, it lasts for about a minute and he has never done that before. Any idea what it might be?

you should go see a veterinary, its probably hair ball, or old age.
